Use of Public Roads

Use of Public Roads

Public roads are the setting where traffic takes place. It is essential to know its parts and how to use them correctly to ensure the safety of all users.

Parts of the Road

  • Carriageway (Calzada): Part of the road dedicated to the circulation of vehicles. It consists of one or several lanes.
  • Lane (Carril): Longitudinal strip into which the carriageway may be divided, delimited or not by longitudinal road markings, provided it has sufficient width to allow the circulation of a row of automobiles that are not motorcycles.
  • Shoulder (Arcén): Longitudinal strip adjacent to the carriageway, not intended for the use of automobiles, except in exceptional circumstances.
  • Berm (Berma): Longitudinal strip, paved or not, comprised between the outer edge of the shoulder and the ditch or embankment.

Direction of Traffic

As a general rule, on all roads subject to traffic legislation, motor vehicle circulation, and road safety, vehicles will drive on the right and as close as possible to the edge of the carriageway.

Use of Lanes

On roadways with two-way traffic

  • With two lanes: Drive in the right lane. The left lane is used for overtaking or turning left.
  • With three lanes: Drive in the right lane. The central lane is used for overtaking or turning left, but never for U-turns. The left lane is reserved for oncoming traffic.

On one-way roadways

Drive in the lane that best suits your destination, provided that road markings allow it.

Driving on the Shoulder

The following vehicles are obliged to drive on the shoulder (if it is passable and sufficient):

  • Animal-drawn vehicles.
  • Special vehicles with a maximum authorized mass not exceeding 3,500 kg.
  • Cycles and mopeds.
  • Vehicles for people with reduced mobility.
  • Vehicles following cyclists.

Remember that correct use of the road is key to traffic flow and safety.
