As a general rule, is it correct to remove the helmet of a motorcyclist who has been in an accident?

Question

DentroTest · Accepted Answer

The correct answer is No, unless it impedes breathing. As a general rule, you should never remove the helmet of an accident victim because the impact may have caused spinal injuries, specifically to the cervical vertebrae. Removing it without the proper technique and without immobilizing the neck can cause irreversible spinal cord injuries (such as paraplegia or tetraplegia) or death. The only exception allowed is when the helmet prevents the victim from breathing or if it is strictly necessary to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Even in this case, the maneuver should ideally be performed by two people who know the technique to guarantee the alignment of the head-neck-trunk axis.
