How to read road signs in Spain

To understand traffic rules on Spanish roads, it helps to read the visual language of each sign. Its shape, colour and technical code let you anticipate its meaning even from a distance.

Shapes

  • Triangular signs: warn of danger.
  • Circular signs: show prohibitions, restrictions or mandatory rules.
  • Square or rectangular signs: provide information about directions, lanes, services or guidance.
  • Special shapes: Stop and Give Way are recognisable by their unique silhouettes.

Colours

  • White and red: danger, prohibition or general regulation.
  • Blue: mandatory instructions or motorway and dual carriageway information.
  • Yellow: temporary roadworks signs that take priority over fixed signs.
  • Green, brown or purple: specific routes, tourist destinations or special road networks.
