Yes, it is entirely correct and legal. Although the gear lever has traditionally been placed on the floor (center console), many modern vehicles, especially MPVs, vans, and some compact cars, incorporate it into the dashboard.  This location offers ergonomic and safety advantages, as the lever is positioned closer to the steering wheel, reducing the time the driver has to take their hand off the steering wheel to change gears. It also frees up space between the front seats. Therefore, it is not exclusive to heavy vehicles nor is it necessarily uncomfortable.
