The parking brake (commonly known as the handbrake) is exclusively designed to keep the vehicle immobilized once it has stopped, either when parking or during long stops on an incline. It should not be used as a service brake (the pedal) because:  It generally acts only on the rear wheels. Being mechanical and abrupt, it can instantly lock the wheels, causing a skid and loss of vehicle control. Using it while driving can severely damage the braking system and transmission.  The options regarding using it in curves or if the vehicle has ABS are incorrect, as ABS works with the service brake, not necessarily the mechanical handbrake, and using it in curves is extremely dangerous.
