If circumstances arise that make it dangerous to continue overtaking (for example, an oncoming vehicle appears sooner than expected or the vehicle being overtaken increases its speed), the driver must immediately abort the maneuver for safety. General regulations state that you must reduce speed quickly, signal your return to the right lane using the indicator, and fall back behind the vehicle you intended to pass. Accelerating to try and force the maneuver increases the risk of a head-on collision, and stopping on the shoulder is not the correct operational reaction in flowing traffic.
