Motorcycle Rider's Gear

Clothing is the most important element of a motorcyclist's passive safety. Its function is twofold: to protect against bodily harm in the event of a fall (abrasion and impact) and to protect against inclement weather (cold, rain, wind), which helps the rider maintain concentration.

Important for the exam: In the event of an accident, proper equipment not only prevents wounds but also cushions the impact.

1. The Protective Helmet

This is the most vital safety element. Its use is mandatory for both the driver and the passenger on:

  • Motorcycles.
  • Mopeds.
  • Three-wheeled vehicles.
  • Quadricycles (Quads).

Fundamental Requirements:

  • It must be homologated/approved according to current regulations (look for the approval label inside).
  • It must be properly adjusted using the retention system (chin strap) so it does not come off during an impact.
  • If it suffers a heavy blow, even if it does not appear damaged externally, it must be replaced, as its internal absorption structure will have been deformed.

Helmet parts and types

A helmet mainly consists of three parts:

  1. Visor: It must be made of resistant material that does not fog up and is scratch-resistant.
  2. Inner lining: Absorbs the energy of the impact and provides comfort (prevents fatigue).
  3. Outer shell: Distributes the force of the blow and prevents the penetration of objects.

2. Protection of Extremities

The hands and feet are the parts that first touch the ground in a fall due to reflex action.

Gloves

Their use is essential to avoid chafing, wounds, and the cold.

  • Material: Leather is ideal due to its resistance.
  • Fit: They must fit snugly at the wrist (preferably with a pressure closure) to prevent air from entering.
  • Types:
    • Winter: Thermal and thick (thin cotton gloves can be worn underneath).
    • Summer: Thinner or perforated, but always resistant.

Boots

They protect against burns from the exhaust pipe, the cold, and joint injuries.

  • They must cover and reinforce the ankles and shins (tibias).
  • Prohibited: You must not ride in sports shoes or sandals, as they can come off in an accident and offer no protection.
  • Placement: Generally worn under the trousers (except in racing suits).

3. The Riding Suit (Body)

The suit should be in bright or striking colors to increase the rider's visibility to other road users. It should fit snugly to avoid fluttering in the wind (the "sail effect").

There are two main materials with different characteristics:

Additional Protections: Suits must incorporate hard plastic or synthetic foam armor in critical areas such as elbows, knees, and shoulders to cushion impacts and prevent fractures.

Note on waterproofing: Materials like Gore-Tex are excellent for balancing body temperature and repelling water. It is always recommended to carry a complementary waterproof oversuit in case of heavy rain.

4. Specific Accessories

To complete safety and comfort, there are accessories designed to cover the gaps in the main suit:

  • Neck Warmer (Neck Gaiter): A technical scarf for the neck. It protects from the wind and prevents insects from entering. It is safer than a traditional scarf, as it has no knots or ends that could get caught.
  • Balaclava (Helmet Liner): A thin hood (silk or cotton) worn under the helmet. It improves hygiene and protects from the cold.
  • Kidney Belt: Placed in the lumbar area, under the suit. It protects the kidneys from motorcycle vibrations and the cold, while also preventing spinal jarring.
