How does a phone conversation lasting more than a minute and a half influence driving ability?

Question

DentroTest · Accepted Answer

Holding a phone conversation while driving causes significant cognitive distraction. Studies show that, after a minute and a half of conversation (90 seconds), the driver's brain partially disconnects from the road environment to focus on the talk. This happens even when using permitted hands-free devices. The main consequence is that the driver stops perceiving an important part of the traffic signs and circumstances (it is estimated that up to 40% of signs are not perceived), a phenomenon known as 'inattentional blindness'. Therefore, using hands-free does not prevent mental distraction, and the average speed usually decreases, not increases, because of the lack of attention.
