At approximately what distance from the steering wheel should the driver be positioned to ensure airbag safety and effectiveness?

Question

DentroTest · Accepted Answer

The correct answer is 25 centimeters. Detailed Explanation: The airbag is a passive safety system that deploys at high speeds (up to 300 km/h) via a pyrotechnic detonation. The driver's position is critical to prevent the system itself from causing injury. Why 25 cm?: A distance of approximately 25 cm between the center of the driver's chest and the center of the steering wheel is recommended. This gap allows the bag to fully inflate before catching the driver's body, effectively cushioning the impact. Risks of being closer (e.g., 5 cm): If sitting closer than 10 cm, the force of the explosion upon inflation can cause severe burns, facial injuries, or rib fractures before the bag is ready to protect you. Comfort vs. Safety: Adjusting the seat 'to a comfortable distance' is incorrect if that position involves sitting right up against the steering wheel. Correct ergonomics involve slightly bent arms and a supported back, while always maintaining the safety margin with the airbag.
