What is the main function of the muffler in a vehicle’s exhaust system?

Question

DentroTest · Accepted Answer

The correct answer is to reduce the noise produced by engine explosions. The exhaust system has two fundamental missions: to evacuate burnt gases to the outside and to dampen the sound derived from the engine's internal explosions. It is important to differentiate the components: The Muffler (Silencer): Handles acoustics (reducing decibels). The Catalytic Converter: Handles chemistry (reducing polluting and toxic gases). Driving with a broken muffler, or without one, is prohibited because it exceeds the permitted noise pollution limits.
