What is the main function of a tire's sidewalls?

Question

DentroTest · Accepted Answer

The sidewalls are the lateral parts of the tire and play a vital structural and protective role. Being the most flexible area, their main task is to absorb deformations and cushion impacts caused by road irregularities or hitting curbs, thus protecting the inner casing. It is important not to confuse the sidewall with the tread (the contact patch with the ground), as the incorrect options describe the tread's functions: Water evacuation is handled by the tread pattern (grooves). Transmitting acceleration/braking forces and ensuring grip are also the primary responsibilities of the tread surface.
