What is the correct action regarding vehicle battery maintenance before embarking on a trip?

Question

DentroTest · Accepted Answer

For proper battery maintenance, especially before a long trip, the terminals must be checked. They should be clean, tight, and coated with a thin layer of grease or petroleum jelly. This protects them from moisture and prevents sulfation (white/greenish corrosion), which hinders the flow of electric current and can prevent the car from starting. Why the other options are incorrect: Keep it greased and wet: Incorrect. The exterior of the battery must always be kept clean and dry. Moisture and dirt on the casing can create a conductive bridge between the poles, causing the battery to discharge. Empty the liquid: The electrolyte (mixture of water and sulfuric acid) should never be emptied. If the battery requires level maintenance, only distilled water should be added to cover the plates, never emptied.
