Traffic regulations in Spain state that any vehicle equipped with high beam (main beam) lights driving at more than 40 km/h on an insufficiently lit interurban road (outside built-up areas) is obliged to have the high beam lights switched on. However, you must switch to low beam (dipped beam) whenever there is a risk of dazzling other road users (both oncoming traffic and those ahead of you). If the speed were 40 km/h or less, the use of high beams would be optional, and low beams could be used instead.
