TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) is the electronic system for monitoring tire pressure. Its function is to continuously supervise the air pressure in the wheels and alert the driver, via a warning light on the dashboard, when it detects a dangerous loss of pressure (generally more than 25% of the recommended level). This system has been mandatory for all new passenger cars registered in the EU since November It is vital for safety (prevents blowouts and improves grip) and efficiency (reduces fuel consumption). It should not be confused with oil pressure (which lubricates the engine) or turbo pressure (which forces air into the engine).
