Within the PAS protocol (Protect, Alert, Help), the first step is 'Protect'. This means making the area safe to avoid further accidents. The correct action is to apply the parking brake (handbrake) to immobilize the wheels and to switch off the ignition (stop the engine) to stop the fuel pump and reduce the risk of fire from sparks. Disconnecting the battery would be ideal but is not a viable immediate measure without tools, and placing objects such as chocks is not the primary standard procedure for passenger cars in an emergency.
