What is the main function of the engine air filter?

Question

DentroTest · Accepted Answer

The function of the air filter is to ensure that the air entering the cylinders for combustion is free of impurities. The engine needs to intake large amounts of outside air to mix with the fuel; if this air contained dust, sand, or debris, it would act like sandpaper, causing premature wear on internal parts (cylinders, pistons, and rings). Therefore, the correct answer is to clean the air that mixes with the fuel. Important: Do not confuse this with the cabin filter (pollen filter), which is responsible for cleaning the air from the heater and air conditioning that the passengers breathe.
