How the trailer exam works

The trailer theory exam is a specific 20-question test. You must already hold the licence for the towing vehicle.

The theory test

20 specific questions, 20 minutes and a maximum of 2 mistakes. A blank answer counts as a fail. It covers B+E, C+E and D+E.
The common test is not repeated if you already passed it for the towing-vehicle licence and it is still valid.
B+E can be obtained at 18 with Permit B. C+E and D+E follow the truck or bus permit age, including the CAP reduction.

After the theory test

Next come closed-circuit manoeuvres and on-road driving with the combination.
B+E authorises a trailer over 750 kg. Below that weight, within the combination limits, Permit B may be enough.

Languages

For B+E: Spanish and a co-official language. For C1+E, C+E, D1+E and D+E: also English and French. German and easy-read format are not available for these tests.

Co-official languages are requested in their region: Catalan in Catalonia and the Balearic Islands, Basque in the Basque Country and Navarre, Galician in Galicia and Valencian in the Valencian Community.

Before you sit the exam

Medical check

The psychophysical fitness report is valid for 90 days. It expires before the exam if you get it too early.

Fee

The DGT fee covers two sittings. If you fail both, you must submit a new application.

Validity

A passed test is kept for two years. If you do not get the licence in that time, you must sit it again.

Preparation

You can prepare independently or at a driving school. DentroTest practises the theory test: it does not file the application or teach on-road lessons.
