How the A1 and A2 motorcycle exam works

Motorcycles have a specific 20-question test. If A1 or A2 is your first licence, you must also pass the common car theory test first.

The theory test

  • The specific test has 20 questions, 20 minutes and a maximum of 2 mistakes. A blank answer counts as a fail.
  • If you have not yet passed the common test, A1 or A2 also includes the 30-question theory exam, 30 minutes and up to 3 mistakes.
  • You do not need to retake that common test if you already passed it and it is still valid, for example because you are taking the B or passed it less than two years ago.
  • Permit A, once you have held A2 for more than two years, is not this exam: it is obtained with a training course.

After the theory test

  • After the theory test there is a closed-circuit skills test and an on-road circulation test.
  • A1 can be obtained at 16 and A2 at 18. Permit A requires age 20 and two years holding A2.

Languages

Spanish, the co-official language of your region, English, French and German. Easy-read format is also available for A1 and A2.

Co-official languages are requested in their region: Catalan in Catalonia and the Balearic Islands, Basque in the Basque Country and Navarre, Galician in Galicia and Valencian in the Valencian Community.

Before you sit the exam

Medical check

The psychophysical fitness report is valid for 90 days. It expires before the exam if you get it too early.

Fee

The DGT fee covers two sittings. If you fail both, you must submit a new application.

Validity

A passed test is kept for two years. If you do not get the licence in that time, you must sit it again.

Preparation

You can prepare independently or at a driving school. DentroTest practises the theory test: it does not file the application or teach on-road lessons.

Exam questions

How many questions are on the motorcycle theory test?
The specific test is 20 questions, 20 minutes and up to 2 mistakes. If it is your first licence, you must also pass the common 30-question test with up to 3 mistakes.
If I already passed the B theory test, do I need the A2 theory test?
You do not retake the common test while it is still valid, two years from the day you passed it. You do need the motorcycle-specific test, unless you already passed it.
Is Permit A the same exam as A2?
No. After holding A2 for more than two years, Permit A is obtained with a training course, not the 20-question test.
In which languages can you take the A1/A2 theory test?
In Spanish, a co-official language, English, French and German, and also in easy-read format.
