How to check the points on your driving license

It is free. Online on the DGT portal or in the miDGT app, with Cl@ve, a digital certificate or an electronic ID card. Without any of those, by calling 060 or at a Traffic Office with an appointment.

Online, on the DGT portal, step by step

The most complete way: you see your balance and your history with the date of each change, and you download the certificate as a PDF. The screenshots show the portal in Spanish.

  1. Open Mi DGT and identify yourself with Cl@ve

On the DGT online portal (sede.dgt.gob.es), open "Mi DGT" (My DGT) or go straight to "Mis puntos" (My points). It takes you to Cl@ve, the Spanish government login, which offers three ways: Cl@ve Móvil (the app, which includes Cl@ve PIN), an electronic ID card or digital certificate, and Cl@ve permanente (username and password). Cl@ve Móvil and Cl@ve permanente require you to register first.

Go to "Mis puntos" on the DGT portal
Cl@ve screen with three options: Cl@ve Móvil, electronic ID card or digital certificate, and Cl@ve permanente
Cl@ve: choose how to identify yourself.
  2. Mi DGT already shows your points

Once you are in, the "Mis permisos" (My licenses) section shows how many licenses you hold and your points balance ("Puntos").

  3. Open "Mis puntos" to see your history

Besides the balance, a table with each change: the date the penalty became final ("Fecha firmeza"), the points taken off or added, the reason (the offense, a course or a bonus), the balance afterwards and the authority that imposed the penalty.

  4. Download the certificate

Below the history, "Justificante de puntos" downloads a PDF with your balance; "Justificante de puntos detallado", the same with your full history. Both show the date and time of the check.

If the balance does not add up

The portal itself warns that a recent change can take up to 24 hours to show. And the balance only changes when the penalty is final and recorded in the Register of Drivers and Offenders, not on the day of the fine: until then you will still see the previous balance.

Other ways to check them

In the miDGT app

The official DGT app for Android and iOS. Your points appear on your digital license.

  1. Download miDGT from Google Play or the App Store. It is free and published by the DGT.
  2. Sign in with Cl@ve, with your details and a code sent by text message (your phone must be registered with the DGT), with a digital certificate or, on Android phones with NFC, by holding your electronic ID card to the phone.
  3. Open your digital license: that is where you see your points.

The same app has your digital license, your vehicles and your fines.

By phone, on 060

No Cl@ve or certificate needed: you identify yourself by answering a few questions. They only tell you the number of points.

  1. Call 060 (from abroad, +34 902 887 060).
  2. Answer the security questions to identify yourself.
  3. They tell you how many points you have. For a certificate, you have to use the online portal.

Automated service 24 hours a day, every day; with an agent, Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 18:00, except national holidays.

At a Traffic Office

In person, at any Provincial or local Traffic Office, always with an appointment.

  1. Book an appointment on the DGT portal.
  2. Go to the office on the day of your appointment and ask for your balance or the certificate.

What to do depending on your balance

If you have lost all your points, prepare for the license recovery exam.

Frequently asked questions about your points balance

Does it cost anything to check my points?

No. The check and the points certificate are free, whichever way you use. Only the driver certificate, which is a different procedure, has a fee (fee 4.1).

Can I see my points without Cl@ve or a digital certificate?

Yes: by calling 060, where you identify yourself with security questions, or at a Traffic Office with an appointment. In the miDGT app you can also sign in with your details and a code sent by text message if your phone is registered with the DGT.

What is the difference between the simple and the detailed certificate?

The simple one shows your balance at the time you request it. The detailed one adds your history: dates, points lost and recovered, the type of offense and any road safety awareness courses you have taken.

When are the points for a fine taken off?

When the penalty is final through the administrative channel and is recorded in the Register of Drivers and Offenders, not on the day you are reported. The penalty notice says how many points are taken off. If a year passes after the penalty becomes final without it being recorded, the points are no longer deducted.

Why can I not check my points?

The check only works while your license is valid. If you have lost all your points and the DGT has declared that your license has lost its validity, there is no balance left to check: you need the 20-hour course and the exam.

Do I have a separate balance for my car and my motorcycle?

No. There is a single balance for all your licenses and permits: the points you lose driving a car are also lost for the motorcycle.

What is the maximum number of points I can have?

15. You start with 12 (8 if you have held your license for 3 years or less, or if you have recovered it), and you earn points for years without penalties and with the safe and efficient driving course.

Can I check someone else's points?

Only if they have authorized you in the DGT Register of Powers of Representation (Registro de apoderamientos), for the procedure "Consulta de puntos de un conductor", and the check is done by phone. Online, only the license holder can check them.
